PBX vs PABX

PBX, stands for Private Branch Exchange, and PABX, stands for Private Automatic Branch Exchange. Basically, a PABX is a type of PBX that is automated. As all PBX’s these days are automated anyway, we prefer to use the term PBX.

In its earliest days, a PBX is a room where switchboard operators connect calls by manually plugging wires to complete the circuit. As technology evolved, electronic switching was enabled. This allowed the system to be automated. This prompted the need to have a new term to distinguish the new system from the old one. Thus, the term PABX was created for the new automated system.

Nowadays, PBXs have evolved so much and since all PBXs are now automated, there is no longer any need to differentiate between the automated and manual systems. As a result, the terms PABX and PBX are used interchangeably as they basically point to the same system.
